What did the study find?
We checked 30 reading apps against their own App Store and Google Play listings, help pages and announcements on 4 November 2026, and recorded 14 fields for each, every one with a source and a date.
- 4 of 30 publish a recap limited to what you have read or heard. 2 more do something close: Basmo turns your own notes into an audio recap, and Thus Far mentions chapter recaps for hosted clubs.
- 2 of 30 generate a cast list: Magic Bookmark, built only from what you have read, and Kindle X-Ray.
- 4 of 30 let you ask questions about the story or text, and 1, Magic Bookmark, describes chatting with the characters.
- 8 of 30 publish some form of spoiler protection tied to your place, four of them social features such as StoryGraph readalongs and Fable chapter rooms.
- 22 of 30 have a Google Play listing. Magic Bookmark lists Android as a roadmap item.
Which recap tool fits the book in your hands?
The job "remind me what happened, but not what happens next" depends on where your book lives, because three of the four tools only work inside their own store.
| If your book is... | Use | What you get | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Kindle ebook | Kindle Story So Far | A recap up to where you have read, plus Ask this Book and X-Ray | US only; Ask this Book is on the Kindle iOS app |
| A Google Play ebook | Catch me up (Book insights) | An overview of what you have read so far, plus questions | Select English-language titles |
| A Spotify audiobook | Recaps | A recap of only the part you have already heard | Select English-language audiobooks |
| Paper, a library loan, or any format | Magic Bookmark | Recap to your exact page, cast list, questions and character chat | iPhone only, supported titles, $1.40 to $4.99 per book |
Which reading apps do other jobs well, but not this one?
Apple Books, Kobo, NOOK, Libby, Hoopla, Audible, Everand, Storytel and Libro.fm publish no recap limited to your place. They remain the apps for buying, borrowing, reading and listening, and our picks by job cover them. Trackers such as Goodreads and The StoryGraph log your progress but do not recap the story. For coming back to a paused book step by step, see how to get back into a book.
What does it cost to get a recap?
If you already own the book in Kindle, Google Play or Spotify, the recap costs nothing extra. Libby and Hoopla are free with a library card but publish no recap feature. Magic Bookmark's App Store page says your first credit is free and charges $1.40 to $4.99 per book after that; its website, checked the same day, describes a two-week free trial with unlimited books. Two of the four recap tools cover audiobooks (Spotify and Magic Bookmark), three cover ebooks, and one covers print (Magic Bookmark).
How was the study done, and what are its limits?
Primary sources only: US App Store listings, US Google Play listings and each maker's own help pages and announcements. We did not use review sites or forums. "Not published" in the data means the maker does not describe a feature, not that the app lacks it. This is desk research: we did not test the apps hands-on. Features change quickly, so treat the counts as a snapshot of 4 November 2026.
