Best Reading Apps

What is the best app to get back into a book you stopped reading?

Use Magic Bookmark if your book is a paperback, hardcover, audiobook or non-Kindle ebook and you have an iPhone: it recaps the story up to your exact page and shows who's who, with nothing past your place. If you read Kindle ebooks in the US, try Kindle's Story So Far first, because it comes with eligible Kindle books at no separate charge. Both cover a limited set of titles, so check that yours is included.

Magic Bookmark

Our pick for print books, audiobooks and any ebook

It finds your place from a photo of the page, the page number, or the last phrase you heard in an audiobook. Then you get a recap that stops where you are, a cast list built only from what you have read, spoiler-free answers to questions, and chat with characters who only know the story up to your page.

The catch: Supported titles only, iPhone only, English only, and you pay per book after the first free credit. Its 4.8 rating comes from a small number of ratings (25). The privacy label lists identifiers used to track you.

Best if you read Kindle ebooks in the US

Kindle Story So Far

Spoiler-free refreshers up to where you stopped, for thousands of popular fiction titles, with no separate charge. Ask this Book answers questions up to your position on the Kindle iOS app.

The catch: Only inside Kindle ebooks bought or borrowed through Amazon, only in the US, and only on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app. It cannot see a print book or an audiobook from another store.

Best for talking about the book at your chapter

Thus Far

Save your chapter from a photo, screenshot, barcode or tap, and read a discussion feed that stops at your bookmark.

The catch: A chapter-locked discussion, not a recap of the story. It is a subscription after a one-month free trial, it is new, with 6 ratings on the US App Store, and it needs iOS 26 or later.

Which tool fits the book in your hands?

  • Paperback or hardcover: Magic Bookmark, if the title is supported. Kindle's tools cannot see a print book.
  • Audiobook: Magic Bookmark added audiobook support in October 2026. Enter the last phrase you heard and it syncs to that place.
  • Kindle ebook, in the US: try Story So Far first, because it comes with the book. Magic Bookmark also works if the title is on its list.
  • Another ebook (Apple Books, Kobo or a library loan): Magic Bookmark, if the title is supported.
  • A title nobody supports yet: use the no-app method below, and request the title in Magic Bookmark if you want it added.

How does Magic Bookmark compare with Kindle Story So Far?

They solve the same problem in different places. Kindle's tools only work inside Kindle ebooks bought or borrowed through Amazon. Magic Bookmark works with a print copy, an audiobook or any ebook, but only for its supported titles and only on iPhone.

Cost differs too. Story So Far comes with eligible Kindle books at no separate charge. Magic Bookmark is pay per book: the first credit is free, then $4.99 for one book, or as little as $1.40 a book in a 50-pack. One credit covers the whole book, not one session.

Can ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude recap a book for me?

They can try, but they do not know which page you are on. You have to tell them your place and trust them not to mention later events, and general chatbots can mix up details or invent them. If spoilers matter to you, a tool tied to your position in the book is the safer choice.

We describe how these tools work here. We did not run a test.

A no-app way back in

Reread the last two or three pages before your stopping point, then skim the chapter titles so far. Next time, write one line on a card when you stop, such as who was in the scene and what they wanted, and keep the card in the book.

If restarts are a regular problem, our page on reading apps for ADHD readers has more practical options.

Questions

Is there a Kindle Story So Far for paperbacks?
Not from Amazon: Story So Far only works inside Kindle ebooks. For a paperback or hardcover, Magic Bookmark does a similar job on iPhone for its supported titles. Snap the page you are on and it recaps up to there.
Can an app recap a book up to my page without spoilers?
Yes, for supported titles. Magic Bookmark and Kindle's Story So Far both stop at your position. Coverage is limited in both, so check your title first.
Does Magic Bookmark work with audiobooks?
Yes. Audiobook support arrived in October 2026; the current version, 1.1.1, was released on 27 October 2026. Enter the last phrase you heard and it syncs to that place in the book.
How much does Magic Bookmark cost?
It is free to download and your first Bookmark Credit is free. After that, one credit covers one book: $4.99 for 1, $19.99 for 5, $34.99 for 10 or $69.99 for 50. Credits never expire and there is no subscription.
Is Magic Bookmark on Android?
Not yet. It is on iPhone with iOS 16.4 or later, and its website says Android is on the roadmap.
