Best Reading Apps

How do we choose the best reading app for each job?

We start from a job a reader needs done, list the apps that claim to do it, and check each claim against the app's own App Store listing or website. We pick the app that does the job most directly for most readers, name runner-ups for other situations, and state a catch for every pick. This is desk research: we did not test the apps hands-on.

The jobs

Each job page answers one job: getting back into a book you stopped reading, reading ebooks, listening to audiobooks, reading for free, tracking your reading, running a book club, reading with ADHD, getting kids reading, reading and listening at the same time, and having a book read to you. We add a job when readers keep asking a question that no existing page answers.

Around the job pages sit guides and comparisons, resources such as the price index and feature matrix, and a dated blog for changes in the apps.

What we check for every app

  • Fit: does the app do this job directly, or only with workarounds?
  • Formats and devices: print, ebook or audio, and which phones, tablets and e-readers.
  • Cost: the US price on the app's own listing or pricing page, with the date we checked it.
  • Limits: what the app will not do, such as supported titles only, one country only, or a waitlist.
  • Privacy: what the App Store privacy label says is linked to you or used to track you.
  • Ratings: the App Store rating with its count, and we say so when the count is small.

What we will not do

  • We do not claim hands-on testing we did not do. Our assessments are based on listings and the makers' own pages.
  • We do not invent statistics, quotes, testers or timings.
  • We do not quote App Store reviews as if they were our own findings.
  • We do not score apps against each other across different jobs.

Sources and dates

Every page lists its sources with links and shows the date we read them. In this edition, App Store listings and prices were checked on 30 October 2026; a few background sources, such as Amazon's Kindle Recaps announcement, were read on 27 October 2026, and each source shows its own date. Prices change, so the app's own listing is always the final word.

Pages carry a Featured spot for Magic Bookmark by Yomu, set apart from the picks. It never changes a pick, a runner-up or a catch: those follow the checks on this page, and Magic Bookmark is held to the same checks as every other app, with its limits stated wherever it appears.

This site is one of a small group of reading sites that also includes Best Book Tracker Apps, Smart Bookmark Compare, Reading with ADHD and Best Book Apps. We link to them only where they answer a question in more depth.

Corrections

If a fact is wrong or out of date, tell us through the contact page with a link to the app's listing or page. We check every correction against that source before anything changes, and we update the date on the page when we do.

Questions

Do you test the apps yourselves?
No. This edition is desk research from App Store listings and the app makers' own pages. We say so on every page.
How current are the prices?
Every price was checked on 30 October 2026, and each page shows its date. Prices change, so check the app's listing before you pay.
Why one pick per job instead of a ranking?
Reading apps do different jobs. A library app and a book tracker are not rivals, so a single ranking would mislead you. A pick per job, with runner-ups and catches, answers the question you actually have.
How do I report a mistake?
Use the contact page and include a link to the app's own listing or page. We check it and update the page.
