What are the best apps for BookTok and romantasy readers?
Romantasy readers juggle long series, big casts and long waits between books, so the most useful app is one that gets you back into a series without spoilers: Magic Bookmark launched with the BookTok romantasy titles readers ask about and recaps them up to your exact page. Use The StoryGraph to find your next read by mood with content warnings, Fable to talk about the book in spoiler-free chapter rooms, and Libby to borrow the hyped titles free.

Magic Bookmark
Our pick for keeping long romantasy series straight
Its catalog launched with the romance, fantasy, romantasy and YA titles popular on BookTok and Bookstagram, including Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, Onyx Storm, A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass and The Cruel Prince. Snap the page you are on and get a recap, a cast list and answers that stop exactly there, in print, ebook or audiobook.
The catch: Supported titles only, iPhone only, English only, and pay per book after the first free credit. Its 4.8 rating comes from a small number of ratings (25).
Also good
Best for finding your next read
The StoryGraph
Mood-based discovery, content warnings and custom tags, Goodreads import, and readalongs where comments stay locked until other readers reach that point.
The catch: You update your progress by hand unless you read on Kobo, and some extras need Plus at $4.99 a month.
Best for talking about the book
Fable
Thousands of free book clubs, organized into spoiler-free chapter rooms, and you can read at your own pace.
The catch: Rooms are by chapter, so a reader a few pages behind can still see a chapter's later posts. Fable Plus is $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year.
Best for reading the hyped books free
Libby
Borrow ebooks and audiobooks from your library with a card, and place holds on new releases.
The catch: Hyped books often have long hold lists. Place the hold the day a release is announced.
What do romantasy readers need from an app?
The genre's biggest series share a few traits that shape which apps help: books of 500 pages or more, casts that grow with every installment, invented words and places, and a year or more between releases. The usual reading-app features, such as a store and a progress bar, do not address any of those.
- Getting back in after a gap without reading a summary that spoils the next book.
- Keeping names straight when a series adds new courts, houses or squads each book.
- Finding the next read that matches the mood, heat level and content you want.
- Talking about it without spoilers from faster readers.
- Affording the habit when a series runs to five or more books.

How do you catch up on a series before the next book without spoilers?
Recap videos and fan wikis are written for people who have finished the series, so they often mention later events. The safer order is: first check whether a tool can recap only up to where you stopped, then reread the last chapter you finished, then skim the series' character list at the front or back of the book if it has one.
If you read the earlier books on Kindle in the US, Kindle's Recaps cover books you have already read in a series, and Story So Far covers the one you are in. If you read in print, from the library, or across formats, Magic Bookmark does the same job for its supported titles: photograph the last page you read and it builds the recap and cast list from only what came before. We do not publish plot summaries of any book on this site.
How do you keep a big cast straight while you read?
A cast list that grows only as characters appear is the most useful aid for a sprawling series, because a full character list from a wiki will name people you have not met yet. Magic Bookmark's cast list is built only from what you have read; Kindle's X-Ray lists characters in supported Kindle books. If you prefer paper, keep an index card in the book and add each new name with one line about who they are.
How do you read BookTok favorites without paying for every book?
- Library first. Place Libby holds for the books you will want in three months, and use Hoopla for whatever is instantly available now. Our library apps page explains the difference.
- One subscription at a time. Kindle+ at $11.99 a month suits a month of heavy reading; cancel when the series runs out.
- Buy the books you reread. Spend money on the volumes you will open again and borrow the rest.
- Do not pay twice for a recap. If the book is a Kindle ebook, try Story So Far first, since it comes with the book.
What about book clubs and buddy reads?
Romantasy is a social genre, and spoilers travel fast. Fable's clubs split discussion into chapter rooms, The StoryGraph locks readalong comments until each reader reaches that point, and Thus Far stops its feed at your bookmark. For a club where members read at different speeds, see the best reading apps for book clubs.
What about listening to romantasy on audio?
Many readers alternate formats in a long series: audio on the commute, print at home. That only works if your place moves with you. Kindle's Read & Listen switches between a Kindle ebook and its Audible narration at the same spot, which suits readers who own both. Libby and Hoopla lend many popular audiobooks free.
For a series you read partly in print and partly on audio from different sources, Magic Bookmark finds your place from a photo of the page or the last phrase you heard, so a recap stops in the right spot whichever format you were in. See the best audiobook apps for the listening side.
What should you know about age ratings and privacy?
Romantasy titles are often shelved near YA but many contain adult content, and the apps' own age ratings vary: Fable is rated 18+ on the US App Store, The StoryGraph and Goodreads 13+, and Magic Bookmark 13+ on the US App Store. If a teenager in your house uses these apps, check each one's rating and privacy label.
Privacy labels differ too. Magic Bookmark's lists identifiers used to track you; Libby's lists only diagnostics linked to you. Our feature matrix puts ratings and age ratings side by side.
Questions
- Which romantasy books does Magic Bookmark support?
- Its website lists titles including Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, Onyx Storm, A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass, House of Earth and Blood, The Cruel Prince, Powerless and Red Queen, and it adds more over time. You can request a title in the app.
- Is there an app that recaps Fourth Wing without spoilers?
- Magic Bookmark lists Fourth Wing among its supported titles and recaps only up to the page you are on. On Kindle in the US, Story So Far does a similar job for eligible Kindle ebooks.
- What app do BookTok readers use to track books?
- Goodreads and The StoryGraph are the most common trackers. The StoryGraph adds mood-based discovery and content warnings; Goodreads added half-star ratings in October 2026.
- Can I read romantasy books free?
- Yes, through your library. Libby and Hoopla lend ebooks and audiobooks free with a library card, though popular titles often have holds.
- Which app is best for BookTok book clubs?
- Fable, for free clubs with spoiler-free chapter rooms. The StoryGraph's readalongs lock comments until each reader reaches that point, and Thus Far stops its feed at your bookmark.
- Is there a way to keep track of characters in a fantasy series?
- Use a cast list that only shows people you have met: Magic Bookmark builds one from what you have read in supported titles, and Kindle X-Ray lists characters in supported Kindle books. An index card in the book works too.
- Is Kindle+ worth it for romantasy readers?
- It can be for a heavy month: $11.99 a month plus tax lets you borrow up to 20 titles at a time. Check that the books you want are included before you subscribe, and cancel when you are done.
