What happened to Whispersync for Voice?
By the Best Reading Apps editors · Published 30 October 2026 · Checked 30 October 2026 · Desk research
It is still there under a new name. Audible's help pages now call it Read & Listen, "formerly called Whispersync for Voice". It keeps your place in sync between a Kindle ebook and its Audible audiobook, so you can switch formats without hunting for your spot. Immersion Reading, which highlights the text as the narrator reads, is a separate feature that needs both the ebook and the audiobook.
What does Read & Listen do?
Read & Listen syncs your position between the Kindle ebook and the Audible audiobook of the same title. Listen in the car, then open the ebook at home and it picks up where the narrator stopped. Audible's help page says Read & Listen titles normally sync automatically in the Audible or Kindle app, and that you can also sync manually.
Amazon's own help page adds a detail worth knowing: syncing between devices works on both borrowed and purchased titles, but to use Immersion Reading and the Audible player inside Kindle apps, titles must be purchased.
How is it different from Immersion Reading?
- Read & Listen keeps your place when you switch between reading and listening.
- Immersion Reading lets you do both at once: the words highlight as the narrator reads them. Audible says you need both the audiobook and the Kindle ebook.
Our page on reading and listening at the same time covers both, plus free alternatives.
How do you know if a book supports it?
Audible's help page says a title's product details will say Read & Listen (formerly "Whispersync for Voice-ready") if the feature is available. On Amazon, look for the option to add Audible narration on the Kindle ebook page. The Audible app also has a Read & Listen filter in your Library for titles you already own.
How do you switch from the Kindle book to Audible?
- From your Kindle book, open the More menu (three dots).
- Choose Listen on Audible.
- Confirm that you want to open the Audible app.
You can also stay in the Kindle app: its listing says you can switch from reading your Kindle book to listening to the Audible book without leaving the app.
Is it worth paying for both formats?
Only for books you will both read and listen to. Amazon's Add Audible narration offer gives a discount when you buy the audiobook with the matching ebook, and Kindle+ includes companion audiobooks on thousands of ebooks at no extra cost while you subscribe. If you only ever switch formats now and then, the library is cheaper: borrow the ebook and the audiobook separately in Libby. See the best audiobook app for the full picture.
What if your place stops syncing?
Audible's help page gives one check first: open your app player settings and make sure the option to sync your listening position is turned on. If a title still does not line up, it may not be a Read & Listen title; check its product details for the Read & Listen label.
Who gets the most from Read & Listen?
Commuters who read at home and listen on the move get the most from it, because the hand-off is the whole point. Readers who like to follow the words while hearing them want Immersion Reading instead. And if you only ever listen, you do not need it at all: an audiobook app on its own will do.
