What does one audiobook really cost on each plan?
At one audiobook a month, the cheapest paid way to hear a new book is Kobo Plus Listen ($7.99) or Audible Standard ($8.99), but neither lets you keep it. To own the book, Audible Premium ($14.95) and Libro.fm ($14.99) cost about the same. Spotify's 15 hours a month cover one audiobook of up to 15 hours, which makes it good value mainly if you already pay for a Premium plan that includes it. Libby is free if you can wait for holds.

Audible Standard vs Premium: which should you pick?
Standard ($8.99) gives you one audiobook a month from the 1M+ catalog, and you can listen to it as long as you stay a member. Unused monthly selections do not roll over. Premium ($14.95) gives you one audiobook a month to keep even if you cancel, plus unlimited access to 150,000+ included titles, with exclusive sales and discounts.
Pick Standard if you listen to one book a month and do not mind renting. Pick Premium if you want to keep your books or will also dip into the included titles. Premium credits expire 12 months after they are issued, so do not bank too many.
Is Spotify for audiobooks worth it?
If you already pay for a Spotify Premium plan that includes audiobooks, yes: 15 hours a month from a catalog of over 700,000 titles costs you nothing extra. Unused hours expire at the end of each month, and top-ups come in 10-hour blocks.
Paying $9.99 for Audiobooks Access just for books is closer to a coin toss. Fifteen hours covers any audiobook up to 15 hours long, or two shorter ones, so it compares with Audible Standard's one book a month, without the option of keeping anything. Check the length on a book's listing before you start it.
How to cut your audiobook cost
- Borrow first. Search Libby and Hoopla before you spend a credit. See Hoopla vs Libby.
- Spend credits on long books. A credit buys a 40-hour book as readily as a 6-hour one.
- Use the free trial for a book you were going to buy anyway. Audible and Everand both offer trials.
- Do not let credits pile up. Audible Premium credits expire after 12 months; Libro.fm credits never expire.
