How does the Kobo and StoryGraph sync work?

Rakuten Kobo and The StoryGraph announced an integration on 19 May 2026 that lets Kobo update your StoryGraph Currently Reading progress automatically. Kobo's help page says the sync is free, available to all Kobo readers, shares progress as a percentage that StoryGraph converts to pages or minutes, and can be switched on or off at any time. Highlights, notes and back-syncing are not supported yet.

What was announced?

Kobo's news release, dated 19 May 2026 in Toronto, said Kobo users would be able to track their reading progress with automatic StoryGraph sync, coming in June. The StoryGraph's own App Store listing now lists "Sync with Kobo" among its features.

What does the sync share?

  • Currently Reading progress, sent as a percentage.
  • Automatic updates, so you do not type your page into StoryGraph.
  • StoryGraph converts the percentage to pages or minutes for you.

It does not yet share highlights or notes, it does not sync back from StoryGraph to Kobo, and disconnecting does not remove data already shared, according to Kobo's help page.

How do you turn it on?

Kobo's help article, "Sync Your Kobo Reading Progress with StoryGraph", walks through connecting the two accounts and what to check if progress stops updating. You need a Kobo account and a StoryGraph account. The connection can be turned off at any time.

Why it matters for choosing a tracker

The biggest chore in any reading tracker is typing in your page. For Kobo readers, this removes it, which is one reason The StoryGraph is our pick on the best reading tracker app page. Kindle readers do not get the same automatic sync into StoryGraph, so for them the tracker remains a manual log.

If you are deciding between a Kobo and a Kindle, the tracker is a small factor next to the store and the subscription. See what Kobo Plus is and Apple Books vs Kindle.

How do you set up a Kobo and StoryGraph routine?

  • Import first. If you are coming from Goodreads, import your shelves into The StoryGraph before you connect Kobo, so your history is in place.
  • Connect Kobo. Follow Kobo's help article to link the accounts.
  • Read as normal. Your Currently Reading progress updates on its own as you read on Kobo.
  • Finish the record by hand. Ratings, reviews, notes and did-not-finish decisions still happen in StoryGraph.

Who benefits most from the sync?

Readers who track carefully but hate typing page numbers. Kobo shares a percentage and StoryGraph converts it to pages or minutes, so your stats fill in without effort. Readers who mostly read paper books, or who read in the Kindle app, still update StoryGraph by hand.

If your reading is split across a Kobo and an audiobook app, expect the Kobo side to sync and the audiobook side to need manual updates. Our reading app feature matrix shows which apps cover which formats.

What does the sync not do yet?

Three gaps are worth knowing before you rely on it. Highlights and notes stay on Kobo. Nothing flows back from StoryGraph to Kobo, so marking a book finished in StoryGraph does not change your Kobo library. And disconnecting the accounts does not delete progress already shared.

None of that is unusual for a first version of an integration, and Kobo's help page states the limits plainly. If notes matter to you, keep them in one place: either Kobo's annotations or a reading journal, not half in each.
